AN ANCIENT AND REFINED ART FORM.
Mosaics are incredible designs with a long history that can still enchant us with their vibrant colors and sophisticated play of light.
How is a mosaic made and where does this ancient tradition come from?
Here are some interesting facts about this puzzle-like technique!
AN ARTISTIC PUZZLE
The goal of the mosaic technique is to create decorations by combining small pieces of colored material called tesserae.
The tesserae reproduce real figures or motifs of various kinds (such as geometric or floral).
The most common materials used to make mosaics are marble, stone, glass paste and shells!
A THOUSAND-YEAR HISTORY
The art of mosaic has ancient origins: it seems that decorations with colored enamels were already widespread among the Sumerians more than 3,000 years ago.
Mosaics were very popular in Greco-Roman times and were successfully used in medieval churches. Valuable mosaics also appear in non-Western cultures, such as the Islamic world.
A WORK OF PRECISION
Mosaic decorations were often large wall works that required considerable organization.
The ancient Romans had identified three different mosaic professionals: the painter of the preparatory design, the one in charge of transferring the sketch to the wall or floor, and finally the craftsman who would apply the tiles by hand!
