From the Etruscans to Ancient Rome

THE ETRUSCANS

Etruscan artisans were very skilled in working with bucchero, a black ceramic. According to some, the clay was mixed with coal dust and then fired in an oven at 800 degrees; other scholars believe that the black color is simply due to the firing technique, which transformed the red color of the clay into a shiny black!

The Etruscans specialized in jewelry making, using the granulation technique, which consisted of applying very small gold balls as decoration.

THE ANCIENT ROME

The Romans built things that had never been built before: aqueducts, thermal baths, bridges, theaters are still visible today and show their incredible architecture. Above all, the Romans were incredible innovators, improving people’s lives by building toilets, hospitals, and roads that spread throughout the empire.

The Romans also specialized in making glass.

Public buildings were made of stone, but houses were made of wood; often terrible fires destroyed part of the city, so “teams” were created to put out the flames. The first fire brigade was born. The first firefighters were born.
